40 cubic yards
40 Yard Dumpster Rental in Saginaw, MI
Eight feet of wall, and every inch of it is for bulk. This is the container that runs out of space, and it is the wrong box for anything dense.

The 40 yard container in Saginaw County, MI
A 40 yard roll-off is about 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 8 feet high. Like the 30, it shares a footprint with the 20 and spends the whole difference on height. Volume is almost always the limit that stops it, which is another way of saying it is only the correct container when the material you are loading is genuinely light for its size.
That describes new construction offcuts, framing scrap, packaging, crates, siding and the bulky interior debris of a commercial strip-out. It does not describe masonry, soil, tile or roofing, and no amount of available room changes that. The weight at which a loaded container can lawfully be lifted and driven is fixed by the road, not by the box, so a 40 yard full of rubble is not a large load. It is an unliftable one.
The practical limit on a 40 yard is often the site rather than the material. It is long, it is tall, it needs a straight approach, and the hoist arm travels a long way up. On a job with a wide yard or a commercial lot that is nothing. On a residential street with a short apron and wires across the frontage it can be the reason the answer is two 20s instead.
The biggest box is not the safe default
There is a natural instinct to order the largest container available on the theory that running out of room is the worst outcome. On a bulky job that instinct is sound. On a dense one it is wasteful and occasionally impossible, because the constraint is not room at all.
A loaded roll-off has to be lifted onto a truck and driven on a public road, and that sets a ceiling on what the container can weigh regardless of how tall it is. Fill a 40 yard with broken concrete and you reach that ceiling at roughly ankle depth. Fill it with roof shingle and you reach it not much higher. In both cases you have hired eight feet of steel, pitched debris over most of it, and achieved the same result a 10 yard would have given you at knee height. The size that fits the job is the size that matches the density of what is going in, and the 40 sits at the far light end of that scale.
Roofing stays out of a 40 yard, for the same reason it stays out of a 30
It is worth repeating on this page because the 40 is the container people reach for when a job feels large. A tear-off is not a large job by volume. It is a heavy job in a thin layer, and the whole of a house roof occupies surprisingly little space once it is in a container. Asphalt shingle reaches a lawful lifting weight while the box is still mostly air.
If you are tearing off and reroofing at the same time as doing other work, the usual answer is two containers rather than one big one: the tear-off in a small box, the bulky trade waste in whatever suits it. That keeps both loads clean, keeps both liftable, and avoids the situation where a container is simultaneously too heavy to move and too empty to be finished with. Tell us the roof area and the number of layers and we will size that part separately.
Fire codes, setbacks and the question we will not answer
People sometimes ask how far a container has to sit from a building, and expect a number. We do not publish one, and the reason is specific to Michigan rather than evasive. Michigan's statewide rule adopts NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code, 2006 edition, under Mich. Admin. Code R 29.1652 rather than the International Fire Code that most national pages assume. R 29.1651 then switches that rule off in any local jurisdiction that has adopted a nationally recognized fire prevention code.
The result is that neighboring places run different codes. The City of Saginaw enforces the 2024 International Fire Code under Code § 92.30(A)(1). Saginaw Charter Township enforces the 2018 edition. For Buena Vista Charter Township we could not find which code is in force, and we are not going to assume it. We did not find a published separation distance for this market at all, so we publish none, and we are not in a position to determine fire code compliance for anybody. Ask the fire department with jurisdiction over your address.
Capacity
What actually fits in a 40 yard container
Working figures rather than specifications. On a dense load it is the weight the loaded truck can lawfully carry on a public road that ends the job, not the top rail.
| Material | How much fits |
|---|---|
| New construction offcuts | Framing scrap, sheet offcuts, packaging, siding and window crates from a build. |
| Bulky demolition waste | Interior strip-out of partitions, ceilings, cabinetry and fittings. |
| Commercial clear-out | Shop fittings, shelving, display units and the packaging that came with them. |
| Concrete, masonry, soil or roofing | None of it. Dense material belongs in a small box filled part way, whatever room is available here. |
Suitability
Where the 40 yard fits, and where it does not
Choose the 40 yard for
- New construction, where offcuts and packaging accumulate faster than anything heavy
- A commercial or multi-unit interior strip-out of partitions, ceilings and fittings
- A large clear-out of shop or office fittings, shelving and display units
- Bulky light demolition debris where volume rather than weight is the whole problem
Pick a different size for
- Any roof tear-off, which reaches lawful payload with the container barely started
- Concrete, block, brick, tile, sand, gravel or earth in any quantity
- A standard residential driveway with a short approach, a tight apron or overhead wires
Setting a 40 yard container down in Saginaw County
Most 40 yard work around Saginaw County lands on commercial lots, new builds and multi-unit sites rather than driveways, and that shifts which rules are worth knowing. If the job is a demolition, the notification duty is the one that catches people out: a demolition can require notification to the state even where no asbestos is involved, the fee for an original notification is $100 under MCL 324.5519(3), and ten working days' notice is required. The federal residential exemption covers residential buildings having four or fewer dwelling units that are under private control or ownership, and it falls away on public, commercial or urban renewal projects.
That is a duty on the project, not on the container, and the agencies are EGLE and LEO through MIOSHA. We do not perform or supervise any part of it. Where the work involves digging as well as demolition, the dig notice is yours to file with MISS DIG 811.
Compare
Every size side by side
The dimensions are external measurements of the box and they are approximate: manufacturers build to slightly different sizes, and the three figures deliberately do not multiply out to the yardage in the name. The yardage is the trade name for the size rather than a computed internal volume, so compare the boxes on it and then tell us what is going in.
| Size | Dimensions | Capacity | What fills it first | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Yard Dumpster | about 14 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 3.5 ft high | about 50-70 kitchen-size trash bags | Weight, with the box still half empty | Concrete, block, tile, dirt and roof tear-off. |
| 15 Yard Dumpster | about 16 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high | about 80-100 kitchen-size trash bags | Usually weight, on a mixed load | Garage clearing, flooring tear-out and one heavy room. |
| 20 Yard Dumpster | about 22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high | about 110-130 kitchen-size trash bags | Either, depending what goes in | Most remodels, and a house being emptied room by room. |
| 30 Yard Dumpster | about 22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 6 ft high | about 170-190 kitchen-size trash bags | Volume, on bulky light material | Multi-room work and a full estate clearance. |
| 40 Yard Dumpster | about 22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 8 ft high | about 230-250 kitchen-size trash bags | Volume, almost always | New construction and bulky demolition waste. |

Talk to a real person
Before you book a 40 yard dumpster
Say what the material is rather than how many rooms it came out of, and name the community the address is in. If a smaller box is the honest answer for a dense load, that is what you will hear, and where we could not establish your township's rules we will say so instead of borrowing the City's. Answers
40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
What kind of job actually needs a 40 yard?
New construction, a commercial or multi-unit interior strip-out, or any job generating large amounts of genuinely bulky light debris such as packaging, framing scrap, siding and fittings. If you can carry a representative armful of the material without strain, the 40 is plausible. If you cannot, it almost certainly is not.
Can I put demolition rubble in a 40 yard?
Bulky interior demolition debris yes, masonry rubble no. A loaded container has to be lifted and driven on a public road, which fixes a ceiling on weight that has nothing to do with the height of the walls. Broken concrete reaches that ceiling at about ankle depth in a box this size, so dense demolition waste goes into a small container filled part way.
Why is the 40 yard not simply the safest choice?
Because the thing that stops a heavy load is weight, and no amount of extra room changes it. The safest choice is the container that matches the density of your material. On a bulky job that is often the 40. On anything dense it is the 10, and on a mixed house clearance it is usually the 20.
Service area
40 Yard Dumpster delivered across Saginaw County
We run containers out of 3102 Sawyer Dr to seventeen communities in Saginaw County. They are grouped below by what kind of government each one actually is, because in Michigan that is the difference between a city hall, a township board and a village that sits inside a township — and it decides who you have to call about your own address. If yours is not listed, call anyway; we most likely still get there.

Two cities and two villages. A village sits inside its township, so a village address has two governments over it at once.
