Junk Removal across Saginaw County

There are two ways to get rid of accumulated household junk. One is a crew who arrive in a window, walk through your rooms, carry things out and charge by what they take. The other is a container left on your driveway that you fill when you feel like it. This page is about the second one, because for most people clearing a house it is the less stressful arrangement and the one that does not require anybody to be ready by a particular hour.

The practical difference is control. A container that is already on site lets you work a cupboard at a time over several evenings, stop when you have had enough, change your mind about a chair at nine o'clock at night, and come back to it. Nothing leaves the property until you say the job is finished. Nobody is standing in the kitchen waiting for a decision about your mother's dining set.

What the container cannot do is take material the law treats separately, and Michigan's list of those materials is more specific than the summaries you will see elsewhere. There is a section on it below, written item by item, because the state's own page is item by item and generalizing it produces statements that are simply not true. Michigan's environmental agency, EGLE, publishes the list.

At a glance

What you get with junk removal

  • You load it, so nobody walks through the house and nothing leaves until you say so
  • Fill it over several evenings rather than inside an appointment window
  • Material-by-material detail on what Michigan keeps out of landfills
  • Plywood under the wheels and both rails on your drive

A container, not a crew

The container arrives empty, goes where you point, and stays. From that moment the pace is yours. People clearing a long-accumulated house rarely do it in one sustained push; they do it in bursts, with gaps for deciding. A container accommodates that in a way a scheduled crew cannot, and it costs nothing in awkwardness when a room turns out to be harder than expected.

Practically, a few habits make the box hold more. Break down anything that is mostly air — flat-pack furniture, boxes, wardrobes — before it goes in, because a container fills with shapes rather than with weight when the load is household junk. Load from the front wall backward and keep the surface level, since nothing may sit above the top rail when the truck comes to collect. Put the dense items in first and along the floor, and keep the light bulky things for the top layer.

If you are not sure whether something belongs in the box, leave it to one side and ask on the phone rather than burying it in the middle of a load. A single item in the wrong place can change what happens to the whole container, and a thirty-second question beats unloading it later.

What Michigan actually keeps out of landfills

This matters enough that we go through it properly. The authority is Section 11514 of Part 115, Solid Waste Management, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451. EGLE publishes a page of prohibited materials, and the entries are not uniform. Some are bans, some are conditions, and some are recycling instructions with no landfill ban stated at all.

Banned, on EGLE's wording: yard clippings, except those that are diseased, infested or part of an invasive species control program. Empty drums, unless full of solid waste or crushed. Low-level radioactive waste, which must go to a facility holding a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license. Conditional: scrap tires, which a landfill may accept if cut or processed, and medical waste, which must be packaged and labeled under Part 138 and treated first — though household needles and lancets are not prohibited from landfill disposal.

Split by who generated it: hazardous waste and bulk liquids from businesses and institutions must go elsewhere or be solidified first, while the household versions are, in EGLE's own words, not prohibited from landfills even though they are poorly suited to them. And three entries that people routinely assume are banned carry no stated landfill ban on that page at all: beverage containers, lead acid batteries and used oil — although used oil must be recycled in Michigan, and all three have recycling routes given. Haulers are required to inform customers about landfill-banned wastes annually, which is part of why this list is here rather than buried.

Where the City's own collection stops

If you are inside the City of Saginaw, the ceiling on curbside service is written down and it is lower than most people assume. Section 50.05 requires refuse containers of 35 gallons or less, states that “the weight of the container and its contents may not exceed 50 pounds,” and limits each household to no more than 20 bags per week. Cardboard boxes, barrels, metal or fiber drums and paper shopping bags are prohibited containers under the same section, which rules out the way most people instinctively package a clear-out.

Section 50.06(B) adds a shape test the curb cannot get around: the collection will not take “small items in piles requiring a shovel or fork to handle.” Between the weight cap, the bag count and that phrase, a genuine declutter runs out of road quickly.

One honesty note, because the opposite is written everywhere. Section 50.06 does not mention appliances, tree stumps or bulky items. Sites that tell you the City refuses those under Section 50.06 are describing something the ordinance does not say. For those, ask the City — saginaw-mi.com — and if you are not in the City, ask your township, because we did not read sixteen other refuse ordinances and will not invent them.

Suitability

When junk removal is the right call, and when it is not

Read both columns against what is actually going to come out of the building before anything is booked. It is a short job and it decides the size.

Good fits for this container

  • Clearing a house over several evenings rather than in one scheduled visit
  • Furniture, mattresses, carpet, toys and the contents of a full basement
  • Garage and shed contents accumulated over many years
  • A declutter where you want to change your mind halfway through

Send these somewhere else

  • Household hazardous waste such as solvents, cleansers and pesticides
  • Scrap tires in quantity, which Michigan handles under separate rules
  • Anything that needs to sit above the container's top rail

Sizing

Container sizes that run on junk removal

Every size below runs on this service. Choose on the density of the material and the cubic yards look after themselves, because what ends a dense load is the weight the loaded truck can lawfully carry on a public road.

  • 10 yard — One room, a small shed, or a load that is heavy rather than bulky.
  • 15 yard — A full garage, or a basement that has been filling up quietly for a decade.
  • 20 yard — The default whole-house declutter. Most mixed household loads land here.
  • 30 yard — A larger home, or anything dominated by furniture and other bulky light items.
Roll-off container sizes we run across Saginaw County, MI. The last column is physics, not a term of the deal: dense material reaches the weight a loaded truck can lawfully carry on the road with the box part empty, bulky material runs out of room first.

Junk Removal in Saginaw County: the local specifics

Everybody on our list belongs to one institution for household waste. The Mid Michigan Waste Authority serves 34 member municipalities across the greater Saginaw area, the City of Saginaw and both large townships among them, and it runs the household hazardous waste events and the electronics recycling program that a thorough clear-out usually needs alongside a container. Those are the right route for the paint tins, the old cleaning chemicals and the back-bedroom monitors.

What the shared authority does not give you is a shared rulebook. Saginaw County has thirty county subdivisions and five villages sitting inside townships, and a Saginaw mailing address does not tell you which of them you answer to. We read the City's refuse chapter and quote it by section above. For the other sixteen communities we serve, we could not find an ordinance we were able to verify, which is not the same as there being none. Call the township or village office and ask.

Answers

Junk Removal — your questions answered

Do you load the junk for me?

No, and that is the point of this arrangement. The container is left on your driveway and you fill it on your own clock, which means no appointment window, no crew walking through your rooms and nothing leaving the property until you say the job is done. If you want things carried out for you, that is a different kind of service from a different kind of company.

Which materials does Michigan actually keep out of landfills?

EGLE's prohibited-materials page lists them item by item, and the entries differ. Yard clippings, empty drums that are neither full nor crushed, and low-level radioactive waste are banned. Scrap tires and medical waste are conditional. Hazardous waste and bulk liquids are banned for businesses and institutions but not for households. The list does not reduce to a single sentence, which is why we do not try.

Are tires, batteries and used oil banned from Michigan landfills?

Not in the way most sites claim. On EGLE's page, lead acid batteries and used oil carry no stated landfill ban, though used oil must be recycled in Michigan and recycling routes are given for both. Scrap tires are conditional: a landfill may accept them if they are cut in half or processed. Beverage containers likewise carry no ban language. The accurate answer is material by material.

Can household paint, cleaners or pesticides go in the container?

They should not. EGLE notes that household hazardous waste is not prohibited from landfills, but it also says plainly that landfills are not the right place for it, and a container of mixed junk is a worse place still. The Mid Michigan Waste Authority runs household hazardous waste events for its member municipalities, which is the route to use for solvents, cleansers and pesticides.

Does the City of Saginaw collect bulky items at the curb?

We are not going to answer that for the City. Section 50.06 lists eleven categories the collection will not take and bulky items, appliances and stumps are not among them, so we will not claim the ordinance excludes them. Collection arrangements can also sit with a contractor rather than in the code. Ask the City directly, and if you are outside the City, ask your own township.

Service area

Junk Removal across Saginaw County

We run containers out of 3102 Sawyer Dr to seventeen communities in Saginaw County. They are grouped below by what kind of government each one actually is, because in Michigan that is the difference between a city hall, a township board and a village that sits inside a township — and it decides who you have to call about your own address. If yours is not listed, call anyway; we most likely still get there.

The city

The only jurisdiction in this list whose refuse rules we were able to read and quote.

Townships

A township board, not a city hall. We could not establish container or refuse rules for any of these, and we do not publish ones we could not read.

Other incorporated places

Two cities and two villages. A village sits inside its township, so a village address has two governments over it at once.
