The 20 yard container in Saginaw County, MI

A 20 yard roll-off is about 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It is the container most households in Saginaw County end up with, and that is not laziness on anyone's part. A whole house of accumulated belongings, furniture and bagged goods is bulky without being especially dense, so it fills a container by volume at a rate that lands almost exactly on twenty cubic yards.

It is also the size where the two limits stop fighting each other. Below it, weight tends to bind first. Above it, the extra height is only useful if what you are loading is genuinely light and bulky. At twenty yards, either limit can be the one you hit, and which one it is depends entirely on what goes in. That makes it forgiving on a mixed job, which is what a house clearance always turns out to be.

The 20 yard is also the usual answer for a full roof tear-off, with the caveat that you will reach the weight well before you reach the rail. Shingles are heavy, and the box looking half empty at the end of the job is the expected outcome rather than a sign anything went wrong.

Why the default is a default

Sizing advice usually fails in one of two directions. It either pushes everybody toward the largest container on the assumption that more room is always safer, or it refuses to commit at all. Neither helps somebody standing in a hallway deciding what to order on a Tuesday evening.

The honest answer for a house clearance is the 20 yard, and the reason is that the contents of a house are a remarkably consistent kind of load. Soft furniture, mattresses, wardrobes, boxed paper, clothing, kitchen goods and the contents of a loft all occupy a lot of space for their weight. Twenty cubic yards is roughly where a three or four bedroom house lands once it is loaded loosely rather than crushed. If your clearance includes a stripped bathroom or a torn-up floor, the answer shifts, and that is what the phone call is for.

What goes wrong when a house clearance meets the curb

City Code § 50.05 caps a City household at containers of 35 gallons or less, states that the weight of the container and its contents may not exceed 50 pounds, and allows no more than 20 bags per week. Cardboard boxes are specifically named among the containers that may not be used, which catches a lot of people part way through a move.

Twenty bags a week is a real ceiling. A four bedroom house generates several times that in a single weekend, and the furniture is not bagged at all. The City's collection contractor separately publishes a household bulk rule of 2 items per week; any item outside of a container is considered bulk, which is the contractor's posted rule rather than the ordinance and is subject to change. The ordinance is not instructing anybody to rent anything. It is describing the size of the service, and a house clearance is simply larger than it.

Roof tear-off in a 20 yard, and why it still looks empty

A full asphalt shingle tear-off on a normal house goes in a 20 yard, and the finished load will sit well down inside the container. That is correct. Shingle is dense, and a loaded box reaches a lawful road weight long before the material reaches the rail. Anyone who tells you to take a bigger container so the roof will fit has the problem backwards.

Two things change the sizing more than the floor area does. The first is how many layers are coming off, because a second or third layer multiplies the weight without changing the roof at all. The second is the weather, since a tear-off that sits open through a wet day picks up water that has to be carried. Tell us the rough roof area, the layer count and whether the decking is coming off too, and the size question answers itself.

Capacity

What actually fits in a 20 yard container

Working figures rather than specifications. On a dense load it is the weight the loaded truck can lawfully carry on a public road that ends the job, not the top rail.

Approximate capacity of a 20 yard dumpster
MaterialHow much fits
Whole-house declutterThree or four bedrooms and the common rooms cleared out, furniture included.
Roof tear-offA full house tear-off, though lawful payload arrives long before the box looks full.
Kitchen and bath remodelCabinets, counters, appliances out of the room, fixtures and the floor beneath them.
Bagged household wasteRoughly 110 to 130 kitchen-size bags on a bulky load.

Suitability

Where the 20 yard fits, and where it does not

Choose the 20 yard for

  • A whole-house declutter ahead of a move, a sale or a family clearance
  • A full asphalt shingle roof tear-off on an ordinary house
  • A kitchen or bathroom remodel taken back to the framing
  • A basement cleared out after water got into it

Pick a different size for

  • A load that is mostly concrete, block or soil, which belongs in a 10 yard part filled
  • Structural demolition, where the volume climbs faster than a 20 yard can absorb it
  • A single small room, where a 15 yard is the easier box to set down and takes up less driveway

Setting a 20 yard container down in Saginaw County

The 20 yard is the size that most often raises a question that has nothing to do with containers: whose rules apply at your address. A mailing address that reads Saginaw, MI is a postal city, not a government. Saginaw County has thirty county subdivisions, three cities and twenty-seven townships, with five villages sitting inside townships on top of that. Saginaw Charter Township alone had 41,679 people at the 2020 Census against the City of Saginaw's 44,202, and it is an entirely separate government.

That matters because the refuse rules this site quotes, § 50.05, § 50.06 and § 94.068, are City of Saginaw ordinances and they stop at the City line. We could not establish equivalents for the other communities we serve, so we do not publish any. The same honesty applies to our own street: our address is a postal address, and we have not been able to establish from public records which government it sits in either. You can check your own against the Census figures and your local office.

Compare

Every size side by side

The dimensions are external measurements of the box and they are approximate: manufacturers build to slightly different sizes, and the three figures deliberately do not multiply out to the yardage in the name. The yardage is the trade name for the size rather than a computed internal volume, so compare the boxes on it and then tell us what is going in.

Roll-off container sizes we run across Saginaw County, MI. The last column is physics, not a term of the deal: dense material reaches the weight a loaded truck can lawfully carry on the road with the box part empty, bulky material runs out of room first.

Say what the material is rather than how many rooms it came out of, and name the community the address is in. Answers

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Why is the 20 yard the default for a whole-house declutter?

Because the contents of a house are bulky rather than dense, and twenty cubic yards is roughly where three or four bedrooms of loosely loaded belongings land. It is also the size at which neither limit dominates, so a load that turns out heavier or lighter than expected is still inside the container you booked.

Will a 20 yard take a full roof tear-off?

Yes for an ordinary house roof, and it will look half empty when you are done. That is the expected result, because shingle reaches a lawful lifting weight well below the rail. What changes the answer is layer count rather than roof size, so tell us how many layers are coming off before you order.

Does a 20 yard fit on an ordinary residential driveway?

On most of them, yes. The container itself is about 22 feet long and the truck needs roughly 34 feet of straight run to set it down and collect it. The usual obstacles are not length but a tight turn at the sidewalk, a low branch over the apron, or parked cars either side. Describe the approach when you call.

Service area

20 Yard Dumpster delivered across Saginaw County

We run containers out of 3102 Sawyer Dr to seventeen communities in Saginaw County. They are grouped below by what kind of government each one actually is, because in Michigan that is the difference between a city hall, a township board and a village that sits inside a township — and it decides who you have to call about your own address. If yours is not listed, call anyway; we most likely still get there.

The city

The only jurisdiction in this list whose refuse rules we were able to read and quote.

Townships

A township board, not a city hall. We could not establish container or refuse rules for any of these, and we do not publish ones we could not read.

Other incorporated places

Two cities and two villages. A village sits inside its township, so a village address has two governments over it at once.
