The 15 yard container in Saginaw County, MI
A 15 yard roll-off is about 16 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It exists for the job that has outgrown the small box but does not justify the big one: a garage emptied to the walls, a floor taken up across one or two rooms, a deck pulled down, a single room gutted back to studs.
On a mixed load it is usually weight that stops a 15 yard rather than space, which surprises people. Flooring is the clearest example. Carpet and underlay are light, but the tile, thinset and backer board underneath them are not, and a room's worth of that material weighs more than the room full of furniture ever did. The same goes for plaster, old lath, and anything that has spent a week in the rain.
Inside the City of Saginaw most of what comes out of those jobs is already named in City Code § 50.06 as material the City's collection will not pick up, so the container is not a convenience so much as the available route. Outside the City, the rules are the township's or the village's and we will not guess at them on your behalf.
Mixed loads are weight problems disguised as space problems
The common sizing mistake is to picture the pile, estimate the cubic yards and book on that number. It works for furniture and cardboard. It fails on anything that came off a floor, a wall or a roof, because construction substrate is far denser than the finished surface suggests. A room of tile looks like a small heap in the corner of a container and weighs like a load of masonry.
The practical way through it is to separate the question. Ask first what the heaviest single component of the load is, then ask how much room the rest of it needs. If the heavy component is large, the answer is a smaller box part filled. If it is small and the bulk is light, size up. A 15 yard sits precisely where those two answers meet, which is why it suits one heavy room and why it stops being the right call for two.
What the City's weekly service was built to carry
City Code § 50.05 is worth knowing even if you never use the curb again. It caps a set-out container at 35 gallons, states that the weight of the container and its contents may not exceed 50 pounds, and limits a household to no more than 20 bags per week. Cardboard boxes, barrels, drums and paper shopping bags are prohibited containers under the same section.
Separately, and from the City's collection contractor rather than from the ordinance, the published household bulk rule is 2 items per week; any item outside of a container is considered bulk. That is the contractor's own posted rule as of this writing and it can change, so treat it as a pointer rather than a guarantee. Between the two, a cleared garage is well past what a weekly service is designed to absorb.
Keeping the load clean so the job stays simple
A load of one kind of material is easier at every stage than a load of five. It is easier to spread level, easier to keep under the rail, and easier to describe accurately before anything is delivered. Where a job naturally produces two very different streams, say a tile floor and the contents of the room above it, the simplest route is often to do them in sequence rather than mixing them in one box.
Keep liquids out entirely. Paint, oil and solvents are named in § 50.06(F) among the things the City will not collect, and they are a problem in a roll-off for reasons that have nothing to do with any ordinance. If you are unsure about a specific item, ask on the phone before it goes in. That conversation takes a minute and saves an argument later.
Capacity
What actually fits in a 15 yard container
Working figures rather than specifications. On a dense load it is the weight the loaded truck can lawfully carry on a public road that ends the job, not the top rail.
| Material | How much fits |
|---|---|
| Flooring tear-out | Tile, thinset, backer board and trim from one or two average rooms, with weight the binding limit. |
| Garage clearing | A single-car garage emptied to the walls, shelving and workbench included. |
| Deck or fence removal | A small deck taken down to the posts, boards and railings loaded together. |
| Bagged household waste | Roughly 80 to 100 kitchen-size bags on a purely bulky load. |
Suitability
Where the 15 yard fits, and where it does not
Choose the 15 yard for
- Clearing a single-car garage or a packed basement down to the floor
- Tile or hardwood tear-out across one or two rooms, substrate included
- Taking down a small deck, a fence run or a garden shed
- A single room gutted back to the studs, cabinets and all
Pick a different size for
- A pure concrete or masonry breakout, which belongs in a 10 yard filled part way
- A whole-house clearance, where the 20 yard is the size that actually finishes the job
- New construction offcuts and packaging, which are bulky enough to want a taller box
Setting a 15 yard container down in Saginaw County
Garage and basement clearances are the job this size does most often around Saginaw County, and they are also the job most likely to produce something the City's collection will not take. § 50.06(C) names stones, bricks, plaster, shingles, lumber, demolition materials, building materials, concrete, sand, gravel, and earth. A cleared garage usually has at least three of those in it.
If your address is inside the City of Saginaw, that section is the one that governs the curb, and Chapter 50 is current through Ordinance O-274, effective 2 October 2025. If your address is in one of the county's townships or villages, it is not. We were able to read and quote the City's refuse rules and we were not able to establish equivalents for the other sixteen communities on this site, so we tell you to call that township or village office and we leave the invention to somebody else.
Compare
Every size side by side
The dimensions are external measurements of the box and they are approximate: manufacturers build to slightly different sizes, and the three figures deliberately do not multiply out to the yardage in the name. The yardage is the trade name for the size rather than a computed internal volume, so compare the boxes on it and then tell us what is going in.
| Size | Dimensions | Capacity | What fills it first | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Yard Dumpster | about 14 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 3.5 ft high | about 50-70 kitchen-size trash bags | Weight, with the box still half empty | Concrete, block, tile, dirt and roof tear-off. |
| 15 Yard Dumpster | about 16 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high | about 80-100 kitchen-size trash bags | Usually weight, on a mixed load | Garage clearing, flooring tear-out and one heavy room. |
| 20 Yard Dumpster | about 22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high | about 110-130 kitchen-size trash bags | Either, depending what goes in | Most remodels, and a house being emptied room by room. |
| 30 Yard Dumpster | about 22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 6 ft high | about 170-190 kitchen-size trash bags | Volume, on bulky light material | Multi-room work and a full estate clearance. |
| 40 Yard Dumpster | about 22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 8 ft high | about 230-250 kitchen-size trash bags | Volume, almost always | New construction and bulky demolition waste. |

Talk to a real person
Before you book a 15 yard dumpster
Say what the material is rather than how many rooms it came out of, and name the community the address is in. If a smaller box is the honest answer for a dense load, that is what you will hear, and where we could not establish your township's rules we will say so instead of borrowing the City's. Answers
15 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
What does a 15 yard handle that a 10 yard does not?
Room. The 15 yard is two feet longer and a foot taller, which matters once the load includes anything awkward such as shelving, a workbench, cabinet carcasses or deck boards. If the load is simply heavy rather than awkward, the 10 yard filled part way is still the better answer and usually the simpler load to move.
Is a 15 yard enough for a one-car garage cleared to the walls?
In most cases yes, provided the garage is household storage rather than building material. Add a stripped concrete floor, a pile of old paving slabs or a torn-out tile surface and the weight climbs quickly. Tell us what is actually stacked in there and we will say whether to go up, down, or split it into two loads.
Can I mix heavy and light material in a 15 yard?
You can, and most people do. Put the heavy material down first and spread it along the floor rather than piling it at one end, then build the light material on top of it. What you cannot do is treat the remaining space as free capacity once the weight is already near its limit, so if the heavy portion is large, say so before you order.
Service area
15 Yard Dumpster delivered across Saginaw County
We run containers out of 3102 Sawyer Dr to seventeen communities in Saginaw County. They are grouped below by what kind of government each one actually is, because in Michigan that is the difference between a city hall, a township board and a village that sits inside a township — and it decides who you have to call about your own address. If yours is not listed, call anyway; we most likely still get there.

The only jurisdiction in this list whose refuse rules we were able to read and quote.
Townships
A township board, not a city hall. We could not establish container or refuse rules for any of these, and we do not publish ones we could not read.

Two cities and two villages. A village sits inside its township, so a village address has two governments over it at once.
